Freaky creatures have scared and intrigued people since prehistory. Storyteller, podcaster, and YouTuber Darkness Prevails and writer and podcaster Carman Carrion have collected folklore about these creatures over the years, sharing them via their networks. Now these tales have been published by Wellfleet to capture the attention of readers. The 52 folktales of monsters (from the Latin meaning "godlike premonition, unbelievable phenomenon") and cryptids (witnessed but not proven creatures) are arranged by continent to highlight cultural representation. Both traditional Indigenous and more contemporary creatures are featured. Creatures range from the popular, such as Bigfoot and Yeti, to the lesser known, such as Manananggal and Pishtaco. Each entry begins with brief facts and history of the creature, followed by a short story of a close encounter. Lush illustrations and cross-references expand knowledge. About half of the entries include sidebars describing related creatures. The bibliography is also arranged by continent and is followed by an index. The writing is straightforward, neither pedantic nor melodramatic. While not a definitive collection, this volume offers hours of browsing a variety of freaky creatures, human and animal, from around the world.
