Michael Evans returns to Coldwater Cove, Okla., for his mother’s cancer surgery and his sister’s wedding. Ten years before, Mike left without a backward glance, guarding a secret about the death of young Jessica Walker. Now that he’s back, he’s once again drawn to Heather, Jessica’s sister. Heather is a compassionate nurse who loves her hometown and has worked hard to escape the shadow of Jessica’s death. As the budding relationship between Heather and Mike waxes and wanes, the past keeps intruding, as Jessica’s self-promoting ex-boyfriend pursues Heather and her parents, and a wannabe film producer seeks pay dirt by looking into Mike’s past. When Heather learns that Mike was there when her sister died, the couple’s happy ending hangs on uncovering the whole truth. The secondary characters are particularly memorable.
